About Richard

Richard is an employment law solicitor in our experienced Employment Law Team. In a past life, he also spent time working in the HR world, travelling to and advising clients up and down the country on tricky employment and people issues that were weighing them down. He has brought that expertise back with him into the legal arena so that he can help to defuse difficult situations, ideally without having to go to the employment tribunal.

Richard largely works with the owners of small-to-medium-sized businesses and independent Human Resources professionals who want to spend time working on their businesses, rather than being bogged down in complex people management matters. He also works with employees, usually where they have been offered an employment-related settlement agreement.

He helps clients by providing a range of solutions for them that are tailored to their needs, taking into account their appetite for risk and the outcomes that they want to achieve. Richard believes that, by taking a practical and reasonable approach to begin with, clients can make short work of disputes, both in and out of the tribunal.

Legal Specialisms

  • HR and Employment Law Advice - Advising on practical solutions to workplace problems tailored to your appetite for risk, whilst still respecting the law.

  • Employment Contracts and Directors’ Service Agreements - Not just providing a standard template document, but a contract that actually works for you and for your business.

  • Staff Handbooks - Clearly setting out the rules of your business so that they’re easy for you and your staff to follow.

  • Dismissals - Managing the process of dismissing an employee in a manner that respects their rights, but also ensures that you can achieve what needs to be done for your business.

  • Employment-Related Settlement Agreements - Whether you are the employer or the employee, ensuring that you achieve what you want to with a minimum of delays..

Legal Expertise In Practice

  • HR & Employment Law Dream Team - Helping an independent HR professional to achieve a settlement on a firm but fair basis that worked for her client with an employee who had historically not been managed (before the independent HR professional took over the case) and who felt that she was entitled to more than she actually was.

  • Ad Hoc HR & Employment Law Advice - Assisting a local law firm that did not have a dedicated HR Team with people management issues, including advising it on restrictive covenants and their application, not only for its existing staff, but also for new recruits.

  • Self-Employed Contractor Agreements - Preparing bespoke contracts for a property services business that worked with self-employed contractors within a highly regulated sector to meet the needs of regulators and end users.

  • Drafting an Employment-Related Settlement Agreement for an Employer - Preparing an employment-related settlement agreement for a charity who had an employee with long-term performance issues.

  • Advising an Employee on an Employment-Related Settlement Agreement - Advising an employee on a settlement agreement that he had received from his employer where he was not being offered any compensation to leave his employment, and negotiating a better deal that was acceptable to him.

  • Advising another Employee on his Employment-Related Settlement Agreement - Advising an employee who was not being offered enough by his employer to accept an employment-related settlement agreement. A tactical approach had to be taken as the employer did not initially want to engage in negotiations. This apprach encouraged the employer to appreciate the employee’s worth by offering a significantly increased settlement offer that was acceptable to the employee
